The Press describes the aftermath of the blazes as 'horror beyond belief.'

In local news, the New Zealand Herald says about 120,000 workers on New Zealand's lowest wages will get a pay rise of 50c an hour on the first of April.

In the Dominion Post the Government is said to be preparing to trims tens of millions of dollars of departmental spending as it embarks on a line by line review of their budgets.

The Press says Canterbury's own high fire risk may keep its firefighters at home as New Zealand prepares to send volunteers to Australia to battle Victoria's blazes.

The Otago Daily Times reports the Dunedin City Council has voted to proceed with the controversial stadium, subject to conditions. The paper says it is a clear signal the local authority is determined to push the project through.
