The paper says amazing stories of survival are emerging as it is feared the death toll from the Victoria bushfires could reach 300. The confirmed number of dead on Tuesday night was 181, including a New Zealand-born woman.
The Press
The Press leads with the treaty settlement, and says Wednesday's announcement will be significant for Treaty of Waitangi claims in the South Island. The area covered stretches from the upper West Coast across Tasman, Nelson, the Marlborough Sounds and into Marlborough.

The ODT quotes Carisbrook Stadium Trust chairman Malcolm Farry as saying preliminary work on the site at Awatea St could begin as early as June.
