Historic South Island treaty deal; Australia starts quest for answers over bushfire toll; Dunedin stadium work could start in June.

The New Zealand Herald asks the question "How could so many die?" and its reporter says that as the bushfires rage on, Australia is starting its quest for answers.

Also on the front page, rights over the Ka Mate haka will form part of a treaty deal due to be signed with iwi today. The paper says no other settlement has attempted to deal with intellectual property issues.

Dominion Post

The paper says amazing stories of survival are emerging as it is feared the death toll from the Victoria bushfires could reach 300. The confirmed number of dead on Tuesday night was 181, including a New Zealand-born woman.

The Press

The Press leads with the treaty settlement, and says Wednesday's announcement will be significant for Treaty of Waitangi claims in the South Island. The area covered stretches from the upper West Coast across Tasman, Nelson, the Marlborough Sounds and into Marlborough.

Otago Daily Times

The ODT quotes Carisbrook Stadium Trust chairman Malcolm Farry as saying preliminary work on the site at Awatea St could begin as early as June.
