Housing NZ, police meet over gang intimidation

11:47 am on 20 February 2009

Housing New Zealand representatives met police on Friday to discuss solutions to gang problems that are plaguing the Lower Hutt suburb of Pomare.

The meeting comes after gang intimidation forced a woman and her two children to flee their home in Farmer Crescent.

A Housing New Zealand spokesperson says a meeting between the agency and the police took place on Friday morning and action will be taken in Pomare.

The corporation is refusing to comment further until after the action is taken for fear of jeopardising the outcome of the operation.

Earlier this week, Hutt Union and Community Health Service manager Sally Nicoll said the street has good and bad elements but Housing New Zealand must consult residents if it wants to solve the problems.

Mongrel Mob member Fats Wellington, who lives in a Housing New Zealand flat on Farmer Crescent said any meeting between the state agency and the police would be a waste of time.

He said the best way to clean up a neighbourhood is by getting the locals to do it themselves.
