The Festival of Flowers has begun in Christchurch, with thousands of visitors expected in the Garden City over the next month.
However, heavy rain on Friday meant the the 20th anniversary celebration and opening ceremony had to be postponed until Thursday lunchtime.
However, festival organiser Marise Richards says the rain was good for the plants and all other events will continue as planned.
She says this is the first time the festival has been extended to coincide with the Ellerslie International Flower Show, which will also be hosted in Christchurch.
Ms Richards is expecting both events to draw crowds into the central city.
She says the festival will include musical, visual and interactive exhibitions and displays.
