Exhibition of church photographs

9:08 am on 23 February 2009

Photographs of Maori churches in Northland are on display in the Russell Museum.

Curator Marsha Davis says the pictures by Laurence Aberhart capture an important part of New Zealands history, the influence of Missionary Christianity on Maori in the North in the 1800's.

Waatea News reports many of the churches have been lost to fire or storms, or fallen into disrepair in the 20 years since Mr Aberhart first starting seeking them.

The exhibition runs till 7 March.
