Hamilton defends decision to host boxing bout

Hamilton's move to host a highly promoted boxing match will not be a financial failure like the recent David Beckham football match in Auckland, says the city's mayor, Bob Simcock.

Auckland Regional Council has come under scrutiny after losing $1.8 million bringing the LA Galaxy to Eden Park.

But Hamilton City Council has defended its decision to back the fight between heavyweight champions David Tua and Shane Cameron at Waikato Stadium on 6 June.

Mr Simcock says the council is not underwriting the event, and apart from a capped sponsorship deal, all of the risk is with the promoters.

Other bidders for the event were Auckland, Waitakere and Wellington.

Mr Simcock says the deal is no different from the sponsorship of rugby world cup fixtures or performing arts festivals.
