Police have arrested the partner of Joanne Thompson, whose body was found in a house in the Canterbury town of Waiau eight days ago.
They say Ross Simon Fraser, 43, was arrested without incident at 5.30pm on Tuesday in the Waiau area and is in custody.
A post-mortem showed she died after a prolonged and violent assault.
Her body was found after her two children were spotted wandering around outside the house.
