3:05 pm on 27 February 2009

A man has died after being struck by a train just south of the Blenheim Railway Station.

Emergency services were called to the scene, close to the Budge Street railway crossing, about 2.30am on Friday where they found the man had died from his injuries.

Police have not yet identified the man. They say early indications suggest he may have been asleep on the tracks.

The death is the second rail fatality in the town within 24 hours.

A 78-year-old man died when his car collided with a train at the Kinross Street level crossing about 1.40pm on Thursday.

The train was carrying 163 passengers, none of whom were injured during the collision.

Meanwhile, in Havelock, near Blenheim, a person died when a car and truck collided about 5pm on Thursday.
