Consultation closes over extension of alcohol ban

10:58 am on 2 March 2009

Public consultation in Christchurch closes on Monday over a proposal to extend a ban on alcohol in parts of the city.

The proposed bylaw would continue existing alcohol restrictions in the central city, South Columbo street and Sumner. Akaroa is also included on New Year's Eve.

New areas to be covered include: Hagley Park, around the Northlands and New Brighton malls and Jellie Park.

Christchurch City Council says a ban in Hagley Park would help combat vandalism and disorder in the area.

Under the bylaw, the council would also have the power to put temporary alcohol bans in place.

Results of the consultation will be put to the council in May and an extended new ban could be in force by June.
