Bird lovers save Timaru aviary

A Timaru aviary will be relocated and rebuilt after bird lovers raised enough money to keep it open.

The facility faced closure after the Timaru District Council did not budget enough money for it to be moved as part of the redevelopment of popular holiday spot Caroline Bay.

The council originally set aside $100,000 to relocate the aviary but were about $25,000 short.

The Timaru Bird Club had just a few months to raise the extra funds or face the possiblity of losing the aviary.

Club president Joy Agnew says the relocation will begin this week and hopes the community will support the new aviary when it opens in June.
