An Auckland overbridge which serves as a main thoroughfare has been shut after contractors discovered cracks in its structure.
The Remuera Overbridge is near the shopping district of Newmarket.
KiwiRail says the bridge was shut on Tuesday afternoon and dozens of staff will work at the site throughout the night to reinforce bridge supports.
KiwiRail group public affairs manager Kevin Ramshaw says the overbridge is about 100 years old and has weak piers, but there is no danger of it collapsing.
