Council agrees to let GP buy medical centre

8:37 pm on 4 March 2009

A South Canterbury town will keep a much-needed doctor after council negotiations nearly resulted in her leaving her job.

Dr Sarah Creegan resigned as General Practitioner after her bid to buy the council-owned Waimate Medical Centre was refused and further negotiations broke down.

Waimate District Mayor John Coles says the parties have finally agreed on a solution which allows Dr Creegan to buy the centre.

More than 400 people came to a public meeting to support Dr Creegan.

Mr Coles says he cannot discuss the details of negotiations, as nothing has been formally signed, but the council supports her move to buy the practice.
