Road fatalities down in Canterbury

10:36 am on 5 March 2009

The number of road fatalities in Canterbury last year dropped by almost 18%, leading to fewer people also being hospitalised after road crashes.

Forty six people died from road accidents in 2008, down 10 from the previous year.

Canterbury road traffic manager Neville Hyland, says a focus by police on drivers wearing seatbelts and the targeting of drink-drivers were key reasons for the drop.

This year police are focusing on reducing speed, particularly around schools.
