Police in Waikato are commending members of the public who alerted them to a suspected drunk truck driver.

A 44-year-old man was pulled over near Putaruru having driven from Napier - a journey of more than 200km.

Sergeant Simon Betchetti, who is based in Tokoroa, says attending officers noted his apparent intoxication immediately.

Mr Betchetti says those who alerted police could have very well saved someone's life.

The man, who is from Hamilton, was to appear in Tokoroa District Court on Thursday charged with refusing to give a blood sample.
