Northern Gateway toll problem fixed, says agency

The Transport Agency says it has resolved a toll glitch on the Northern Gateway route. Some customers were charged more than 20 times over.

The 7.5km route opened at Auckland Anniversary weekend and immediately drew criticism over its methods of collecting payments. Delays caused considerable traffic congestion.

Ordinarily it costs $2 for cars to use the highway, but the agency says it appears about 400 customers had their accounts debited many times.

The agency says the problem was picked up by the fraud department at a bank.

It says customers will be compensated and steps are being taken to ensure it will not happen again.

There have been complaints that the electronic toll system is not user-friendly and the $365 million route is no faster than the original route through Orewa.

Rodney District Mayor Penny Webster says she hopes it is just a teething problem.
