Auckland Regional Councillors have turned down a pay increase, saying it is inappropriate given the tough economic climate.
Councillors have instead agreed to a pay freeze for the current financial year.
The Remuneration Authority proposed a 3.1% meeting fee increase for the 2009-2010 year.
Auckland Regional Council chairman Mike Lee says councillors believed it was inappropriate to accept a pay increase. He says councillors have worked hard to draft a Long Term Council Community Plan to ensure that rates do not increase about 4%.
The Auckland region faces a number of big challenges over the next few months and budgets needed to reflect and address those challenges, he says.
