A Dunedin company has won a lucrative contract to provide television graphics for the BBC's coverage of Formula One car racing.

Animation Research's three-dimensional depiction of Melbourne's track will be used by the British Broadcasting Corporation for the season-opening Grand Prix on Sunday.

The company faced closure after it lost a multi-million-dollar contract in India last year.

Managing director Ian Taylor says the BBC made its first approach at Christmas, and initially the company did not think it could have the graphics ready in time.

Mr Taylor says the contract will secure the future of Animation Research.
