An earthquake rattled the central South Island at 6am on Saturday.
The quake, centred 10 kilometres west of Twizel at a depth of 15 kilometres, measured 4.9 on the Richter scale.
GNS Sciences says the quake was strong enough to result in possible minor damage in the Twizel area.
