Change in Auckland waste water system 'could affect poor'

8:31 am on 2 April 2009

Opponents of a partial user-pays waste water system throughout Auckland say such a move could mean poorer families paying more.

The Royal Commission on Auckland Governance has recommended the formation of a single company to handle the drinking water and waste water for the entire region.

It has also recommended a partial user-pays waste water system, as is in place in in Auckland City and Papakura.

Opponents say this would will mean large families on low incomes facing bigger bills.

However, Manukau City councillor Jami-Lee Ross says it would lead to a more environmentally friendly system, with advantages for elderly people who use less water.

The government is still to make a decision on whether to accept the commission's recommendations.
