Council wants govt to prioritise Auckland bypass

9:33 am on 6 April 2009

Auckland City Council has joined those calling for the Government to prioritise a roading project that would allow north-south traffic to bypass the centre of the city.

The Waterview Connection would link three state highways, creating the final stage in the western ring route.

The Government is speeding through another big project at Victoria Park, prompting big business interests to call for the Waterview Connection to be next.

The council's transport committee chairman, Ken Baguley, says the Waterview project is vital to cutting congestion.

Mr Baguley says it would create a motorway going from the CBD and from the north to the airport, and also to the south.

He says it should not be necessary to go through the centre of a city to get from north to south.
