An Auckland teacher accused of sexually abusing a young student has been committed to trial.

Nicholas Raymond Baldwin, 61, faces 17 counts of committing an indecent act, including unlawful connection with a child.

The boy was aged between 11 and 13 during the alleged time of offending from August 2007 through till September last year.

His name and that of his school have been permanently suppressed.

Mr Baldwin's lawyer conceded on Monday that there was a prima facie case to answer and the matter would proceed straight to trial in the High Court at Auckland next month.

Mr Baldwin says he vehemently denies all of the charges.
