A Hawke's Bay businesswoman, who has pleaded guilty to 12 charges under the Immigration Act, has been fined and sentenced to community work.

Panadda Wall, 45, is a director of a Waipawa-based horticultural services company which organises labour for orchards and vineyards in Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa.

In late 2006, the Department of Labour targeted horticultural contractors in Hawke's Bay and Marlborough they believed were flouting immigration and labour laws.

Investigators subsequently charged Panadda Wall with finding work for illegal overstayers from Thailand, and Indonesian seamen who jumped ship in New Zealand.

Wall appeared in the Napier District Court on Thursday for sentencing.

The judge said detention was impractical given her circumstances. He fined her $2,000 and ordered her to do 200 hours' community work.
