Report finds against central-city sports centre

3:20 pm on 16 April 2009

An independent review has recommended against a central-city site for an indoor sports centre in Wellington.

The review compares a proposal for a 12-court indoor community sports centre in the suburb of Kilbirnie with the idea of an alternative site on the Westpac Stadium concourse.

Wellington mayor Kerry Prendergast offered the review after councillor Andy Foster appealed to the Environment Court against the resource consent granted for the Kilbirnie site in January.

In his review, Sir John Anderson says the concourse option is completely unsuitable as an indoor sports centre.

The council had agreed to abide by the report's findings, so the Kilbirnie location is now confirmed.

Mr Foster says he still believes the Kilbirnie site is the wrong choice, but despite his concerns will withdraw his appeal.

An appeal remains from resident Mike Mellor, who says the review ignores his concerns that the Kilbirnie site is unsafe for pedestrians and cyclists.
