An estimated 300 people crammed into Waitakere City Council chambers on Friday night for a meeting to discuss the government's super-city plans.
The Government rejected a recommendation from the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance for six sub-councils, in favour of up to 30 local boards, in a decision critics say will erode local representation.
Waitakere City Council has vowed to work with the newly formed Community Coalition for Auckland, which opposes the Government's plans and is organising a protest march on Wednesday.
The coalition says it has about 100 member organisations.
Mayor Bob Harvey told the meeting he welcomes the growing groundswell of opposition to the super-city proposal.
