A total of 247 drivers have been charged with having excess breath alcohol after being stopped at police checkpoints in south Auckland.

Twelve checkpoints were set up in Manukau and Papakura on Friday and Saturday nights: 17,122 vehicles were stopped.

Among those stopped was a boy, 14, driving his intoxicated mother and a friend home. The mother believed it was the safest option.

Inspector Heather Wells says it is time people thought about the consequences of drinking and driving.
