Marineland closes to public

New Zealand's only marine zoo, Marineland in Napier, is to close in its present form on Sunday.

Napier Council closed Marineland in August 2008 following the death of the last performing dolphin, but opened it again on a temporary basis pending a re-consideration of marine zoo's future.

In November, the council considered more than 170 submissions on what should happen to the tourist attraction.

Deputy Mayor Kathy Furlong says none of the ideas provided the "wow factor" that Marineland needs to become viable again.

She says council officials are working on some of the ideas presented in submissions and will report back later in the year.
