Alarm at release of rapist

5:16 am on 27 April 2009

The victim of a rape is alarmed her attacker is being released from prison after serving a third of his sentence, still maintaining his innocence.

The Parole Board has decided to release prominent Canterbury businessman, Peter Maxwell Stewart. He has served 14 months of a sentence of three and a half years.

His victim says she's concerned by his apparent lack of remorse as he still denies the crimes.

She says he should stay in prison until he acknowledges his offending.

The Howard League for Penal Reform says it's unrealistic and unfair for offenders to remain in prison until they admit guilt.
