Mental health facilities at Whangarei hospital are to be upgraded.
The Government has approved a $25 million redevelopment project, which it says will provide more treatment options for mental health patients.
Health Minister Tony Ryall says it includes a new mental health acute unit with 25 beds and sub-acute facilities for patients who have begun to recover.
The hospital has only two wards at present, for patients in crisis.
Mr Ryall says the money is coming from Northland Health's cash reserves and the project will not need new funding from central Government.
