127 burglaries in student area

Police in Christchurch say there have been an alarming number of student flats burgled close to the University of Canterbury.

Sergeant Lachy Garrick says 127 houses were burgled in the suburb of Riccarton over the last three months.

They believe burglars have been targetting student flats because of their relaxed security.

Sergeant Garrick says there are often a number of laptops, ipods, televisions and playstations in one house, making them a popular choice for thieves.

He says students have not been the only victims of the burglaries: a number of homeowners in Riccarton also report thefts.
