A man who jumped from the Devonport Ferry into the Waitemata Harbour in Auckland on Sunday has died in hospital.

Witnesses told police that Simon Johnston, 53, had attempted to jump from the ferry back onto the wharf as the boat left the Devonport terminal on Sunday.

He suffered a critical head injury.

A crewman who saw Mr Johnston fall alerted other crew members before donning a life-jacket and diving in to rescue him.

Fullers' Operational Manager Ian Greenslade says the crew member went above and beyond the call of duty.

In a statement, Mr Johnston's family thanked the crew members who came to his aid.

North Shore police commander Les Patterson says alcohol may have been a factor in the incident, which has been referred to the coroner and to Maritime New Zealand.
