A Korean tourist has died of his injuries after being struck by a number of vehicles while crossing a road.

James Cho, 49, who was in New Zealand visiting friends, was hit while crossing Sunset Road on Auckland's North Shore at noon on Saturday.

Police say he was walking when a rain shower is believed to have caused him to try and seek shelter.

Mr Cho was struck by vehicles traveling in both directions while attempting to cross the road.

The incident has been referred to the Coroner.
