The Department of Labour is investigating a serious accident at a meatworks in Ashburton.
Police say a man was burnt after being sprayed with caustic powder about 10.30am on Thursday.
St John Ambulance says the man is in his 60s and was flown to Christchurch Hospital.
Canterbury Meat Packers, where it is understood the accident occurred, has not responded to Radio New Zealand's inquiries.
A spokesperson for the Meat Workers and Related Trades Union, which is investigating the incident, says the company has good health and safety systems.
