An injured scientist who was evacuated by helicopter from the remote Kermadec Islands, has arrived in Tauranga hospital.

Andrew Cowie, 31, is suffering from a chest injury after falling from a boat onto Raoul Island on Friday afternoon.

He was part of a team installing tsunami and volcano warning systems on the island, as part of a Pacific wide monitoring system, run by the Department of Conservation.

Mr Cowie says he is still feeling "pretty sore" but he should get discharged on Saturday night.
