5:17 am on 22 May 2009

Police are waiting to speak with a woman who was hit by a fire engine in South Auckland on Thursday morning.

The fire truck was responding to a house fire in Manurewa just before 4.30am when it struck her.

The woman, 21, is in a stable condition at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital.

Manukau Area Police Commander Alan Shearer says the truck's emergency lights and siren were operating when the driver saw the woman on the road and swerved to try to avoid her.

Mr Shearer says police do not know why the woman was standing in the middle of the road and officers will speak to her when she is released from hospital.

Police have spoken with four Fire Service officers involved in the incident.
