Disruption predicted during super-city hikoi

9:03 am on 22 May 2009

Commuters in Auckland are being advised to expect delays or avoid travelling into the central business district altogether because of a hikoi on Monday against the super-city.

The protest will also mark the 31st anniversary of the Bastion Point occupation.

Police iwi liaison officers have been working with Maori from Northland through to Waikato.

Inspector Derek Davison says at least 100 vehicles are expected from the north, west and south. That's in addition to people marching from Bastion Point.

The Auckland Regional Transport Authority says passengers can expect delays on buses and is asking commuters to consider other services like trains and ferries.

Protestors will gather at Te Piringatahi o te Maungarongo marae in the west, Awataha marae on the North Shore, Manukau City Council to the south and Bastion Point to the east.

From there, they plan to make their way to Queen Street by midday.

No-one knows for sure exactly how many people will protest. Police expect up to 10,000 as more and more organisations commit to the rally.

Inspector Davison says he expects rowdy and colourful scenes, but he does not foresee too many problems.

Ngati Whatua leaders say the hikoi is only the start of their campaign against the super-city.
