An Auckland man has been charged with the murder of a woman whose body may have lain in her home for more than a month.

The self-employed computer programmer, 47, had previously been charged with assault.

But the charge was changed in the Auckland District Court on Wednesday to murder.

The body of the woman, who can not be named, was found in a house in the suburb of Western Springs on 12 May.

The accused, who also has name suppression, has been remanded in custody for another three weeks while a psychiatric report is carried out.
