Heavy rain has caused a sewage spill in the upper Whangarei harbour.
Whangarei District Council says heavy rain three days ago caused an overflow at two pumping stations.
People are advised to avoid swimming or playing in the water until Tuesday.
The public is also advised not to gather any shellfish for a month, unless the warning is dropped.
The alert is for the Whangarei town basin and upper harbour.
