Vote on bus route through mall next week

The future of a pedestrian area known as Manners Mall in Wellington is uncertain.

Wellington City Council is to vote next week on opening the street to buses.

Pedestrian campaigner Maria van der Meel says there is nothing wrong with the existing bus route and the plan is a waste of money.

However, a council transport advisor says the proposal would improve slow bus trips.

Greg Campbell says amended plans include new public spaces and better pedestrian access for nearby lower Cuba Street, linking it to the waterfront.

The budget for the changes is $11 million.
