Fewer motorcyclists at rally in Central Otago

A forecast of heavy snow seems to have scared some motorcyclists from an annual "Brass Monkey" rally in Central Otago.

Riders from around New Zealand converged on Saturday on the town of Oturehua near Ranfurly for the event.

Snow and bitterly cold weather had been expected down to low levels in Otago, although it has largely not eventuated.

Rally-goer John Giles says the forecast put many people off. Normally the rally attracts more than 2000 riders, but this time, there are only about 1500.

He says it snowed lightly earlier on Sunday morning, but the sun is now shining and the air is warming.
