Two men killed in a crash involving a chemical tanker on State Highway One at Ohakea have now been named.
Police say Stephen Kailahi, 21, of Feilding, appears to have been walking along the highway at about 6am on Sunday when he was struck by the tanker driven by Guy Bach, 48, of Lower Hutt.
The tanker then rolled into a drainage ditch, spilling 12,000 litres of caustic soda.
The result clean up will continue well into this week.
Police now investigating why Mr Kailahi was walking along the highway and whether a car in a ditch in nearby Wilson Road was linked to him.
