Four teenagers and two adults have hypothermia after their waka sank off the New Plymouth coast on Thursday afternoon.

Five of them spent an hour and a half in the water before swimming to shore, cutting themselves as they clambered on to rocks.

The last person, a 16-year-old, was rescued by a tug.

All have been taken to Taranaki Base Hospital.
