Targa Rally underway in Rotorua region

10:17 am on 13 June 2009

More than $500,000 is expected to be pumped into Rotorua's economy this weekend as the Targa Rally is raced in the region.

Some 170 cars have entered the competition, each with a driver, co-driver and at least one support person.

Rotorua District Council estimates the average spend for each team is more than $2,000, with a flow-on effect for retailers and activity companies.

The Targa Rally also pays rural schools to operate car washes and provide packed lunches.

After leaving Rotorua on Saturday, the cars race seven stages, with stops at Ngakuru and Kawerau, before returning to the city in the afternoon.

The ten stages on Sunday include stops in Cambridge and Matamata.
