Iwi opposes council's plan to enforce rates regulation

A central Bay of Plenty iwi is opposing a local council's plan to charge landowners higher rates if they have more than one home on their site.

The Whakatane District Council is proposing to enforce an existing policy across the region, saying ratepayers need to pay for services used in every home.

But the chairperson of Ngati Whare Runanga James Carlson says the policy wouldn't work in a village like Minginui, which is under a single ratepayer title.

The council says there's no reason why the policy couldn't be enforced in Minginui.

A submission hearing for residents in Minginui and surrounding districts will be held in Murupara next week.
