A freezing worker has admitted in Dunedin District Court that he murdered his de facto partner after she announced she was leaving him.

Matakaua Rouvi, known as Karl Rouvi, repeatedly stabbed 21-year-old Moana Aranui at their Bayview Road home, in front of several family members, including the couple's three-year-old daughter. Rouvi, 51, admitted the charge on Monday.

The pair had lived together for more than four years, but in January Ms Aranui told Rouvi that she was moving out permanently.

According to the summary of facts, Rouvi went to the car and retrieved two boning knives with 20 centimetre long blades and fatally stabbed her in the chest, head, face and arms.

He will be sentenced at the High Court in Dunedin on 30 July.
