An eastern Bay of Plenty iwi will on Tuesday commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi by its people more than 150 years ago.

Ngati Awa chiefs who descended from the Mataatua canoe signed the document in Whakatane in 1840.

Ngati Awa Runanga spokesperson Jeremy Gardiner says the iwi expects about 200 people to gather for the day-long celebrations in Whakatane, which include a dawn ceremony and lectures about the history of Mataatua.
