Police boosted after death sparks gang violence

9:56 am on 17 June 2009

Extra police are on patrol in Horowhenua in the lower North Island, as the police look to curb gang violence sparked by the death of the Nomads gang's leader.

Dennis Hines died in prison earlier in June and police believe he wanted the gang to die with him.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marc Hercock says the junior and senior members of the gang are fighting each other over whether to disband.

Mr Hercock says the violence has been limited to gang members and there is no indication that any members of the public are at any greater risk than normal.

Police are following strong leads into the shooting of a man at Hines' tangi and an arson in Levin this week.

They would like to hear from anyone with information about gang activity in the area.
