Council steps in to keep school environment programme

Waitakere City Council is giving an extra $90,000 to help keep an environmental education programme in West Auckland afloat.

The national Enviroschools programme is paid for by Government and local councils. The Ministry of Education has announced it is pulling its funding in December.

The initiative teaches schools ways to improve environmental sustainability by building things like wind farms and improving electricity and water use efficiency.

Waitakere City deputy mayor Penny Hulse says without the council's support the programme in Waitakere may collapse.

She says feedback from schools is that the initiatives are worthwhile and it's disappointing the Government has stopped its funding.
