Legal argument delays former tutor's murder trial

Legal discussions have delayed the start of the trial of a former University of Otago economics tutor charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend.

Clayton Weatherston, 33, allegedly stabbed Sophie Elliot to death in January last year.

Ms Elliot, 22, was stabbed 216 times when she was attacked in her room at her family's home in Dunedin.

The Crown says cries and screams alerted her mother, who tried in vain to get into the room.

The trial was moved from Dunedin to the High Court in Christchurch and was due to start on Monday morning.

However, pre-trial legal discussions have meant a jury will not be empanelled until Wednesday morning.

The trial is expected to last three weeks.
