Christchurch parks, sports grounds to be smoke-free

11:42 am on 27 June 2009

Public parks, playgrounds, and sports fields in Christchurch and on Banks Peninsula are to be smoke-free as part of a new Christchurch City Council policy.

The policy will not be formally enforced, and instead will rely on adults setting an example by not smoking in those public spaces.

The policy also extends to council-owned events such as the Ellerslie Flower Show.

The programme manager of the council's Strong Community department, Alan Bywater, says signs will be put up across the area over the next 12 months.

The city council is the 22nd local authority to introduce a wide ranging smokefree policy.
