Childhood council urges public private partnerships in childcare

The Early Childhood Council says public-private partnerships would meet the rising demand for childcare, which is being driven by an increase in the birth rate.

Statistics New Zealand says just over a quarter of a million babies were born in this country over the past four years - 20,000 more than the previous four year period.

The Early Childhood Council's Peter Reynolds says the Government should partner private day care providers to establish new centres in the areas with the most need.

And Mr Reynolds says a university cap on training early childhood teachers is compounding the problem.
